Since 2015, the English Literature Department at the University of Edinburgh has hosted the annual Edinburgh Undergraduate Literature Conference. This conference is a unique event in that it is the only conference of its kind resident at a university for undergraduate students in literary studies from around the world, who come together at the conference to present their original research. The purpose of the Conference is to serve as a platform for undergraduate research, encouraging independent inquiry amongst students, recognising the best and brightest students from around the world, and also giving undergraduate students who may be aspiring for careers in postgraduate study and academia the experience of presenting research in a rigorous conference setting.

The Conference is entirely organised, led and peer-reviewed by undergraduate students at the University of Edinburgh. This conference is also a unique opportunity for students to meet and interact with fellow, like-minded undergraduates from different universities, fostering a sense of community and collaboration in developing new ideas within a global academic environment.

The Conference has prided itself on its diversity, international reach, interdisciplinarity, the quality of research presented and, above all, the supportive environment it has provided students in developing their sense of identity as budding researchers and scholars. We have welcomed students in the past from as far away as America, Canada and Singapore. Papers presented at the conference have been on a range of subjects, from theatre studies, television, the Medical Humanities, translation studies, et cetera. Above all, the Conference has also enjoyed the support of faculty and postgraduate students at the University of Edinburgh who have always been present to share with the undergraduates attending and presenting at the conference the benefit of their expertise and experience.

The Conference also hosts the Charity McAdams Essay Prize, judged by the board of peer reviewers for the Conference, awarded to the best completed paper submitted to the Conference. The prize seeks to recognise promising research work amongst undergraduate students.

For the fourth instalment of the conference, we seek to investigate the concepts of Dichotomies and Dualities, exploring how connections may be made between seemingly opposing or divergent forces and ideas. The event intends to bring attention to possibilities for exchange and unity, whether political, social, artistic, or scientific.

This is a full-day event and lunch, refreshments and a wine reception are provided.
