‘Heavier than Air’ is a theatre play based on interview data from research conducted with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) teachers working in different educational settings in Australia. Since 2015, this play, devised by Anne Harris (RMIT University) and Stacy Holman Jones (Monash University), has been staged in Australia, Singapore, USA, and Scotland.

For this project, we aim to stage ‘Heavier than Air’ at the University of Edinburgh and propose it as a public lecture in which performing arts are used as a medium to communicate research in an accessible way to a wider audience. This will be an event in which qualitative research and performing arts converge to rethink research methodologies and discuss – with students, scholars, and the general public – innovative ways of engaging in research communication in humanities and social sciences.
